This position is responsible for the Strategic Procurement of Distributed Goods in the  Nutrients, Growing Media, Pest and Disease Controls Categories.  These are branded finished goods that are resold / distributed by Hawthorne Gardening Company (“HGC”).  This role will be based in Marysville, OH and will support HGC which is based in Vancouver, WA.

In this role you will get to:

  • Own and maintain the commercial relationship with current and future distributed good vendors, including:
    • Negotiating annual or multi-year supply contracts, annual pricing, rebate programs, payment terms, warranty agreements, stocking agreements, etc.
    • Work with vendors and category management to identify and execute cost out opportunities
    • Negotiate and execute contractual agreements in accordance to established company policies and procedures
  • Lead supplier selection and development process while working with cross-functional teams like R&D, Marketing, Quality etc. to develop innovative products.
    • Evaluate new suppliers and negotiate product contracts
    • Develop New vendor relationships and identify new products. 
    • Lead evaluation of supplier capabilities, cost structure, risks, and partnership potential to determine supply base
  • Effectively manage relationships with suppliers by implementing the Vendor Score card process to provide regular feedback on cost, quality, service, and continuous improvement
    • Lead monthly, quarterly and annual business review meetings with vendors
    • Ensure suppliers are following Hawthorne sustainability guidelines and implementing required actions
  • Financial management
    • Report and maintain vendor rebate policies or promotional discounts
    • Develop and implement cost savings projects and financial forecasting
  • Create and implement comprehensive procurement strategies for Category materials covering market trends, supply assurance, quality improvement, supplier development, sustainability, and financial & supply risk mitigation:
  • Ensure compliance related process and procedures are uncompromised
  • Develop disruption mapping and mitigation strategies
  • Travel approximately 50% (Domestic & International)

The perfect candidate will have:

  • Bachelor’s degree focused in Supply Chain Management, Packaging, Procurement, Accounting/Finance, Economics, or Business Administration. Master’s degree preferred
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in a people leadership position within Procurement, Sourcing or Purchasing
  • Ability to coordinate and organize numerous material requirements for multiple plants and contract manufacturing facilities simultaneously, while effectively sourcing suppliers and negotiating contracts for targeted materials
  • Ability to effectively navigate in a regulated industry
  • Knowledge of technical language of R&D (and often the vendors) and the business language of the Brands and Purchasing
  • Strong computer skills (SAP R/3, SAP/PLM, MS office programs)
