The Supplier Quality Manager  is responsible for all aspects of the Supplier Quality Management program at Hawthorne Gardening Company. They will be required to perform routine audits of existing critical suppliers according to the established SOPs. The Supplier Quality Engineer will work throughout the new innovation quality process to vet new contract manufacturers and develop a comprehensive quality control plan for the manufacture of critical raw materials, components and products. This role will support qualification of new tooling and assess supplier capability through manufacturing trials, review first article inspections per specifications, and approve/release contract manufacturers. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assure adherence to all Hawthorne (SMG) and Regulatory/Compliance standards that pertain to supplier quality and execute appropriate actions associated with these standards.

  • Lead and perform routine audits of critical suppliers to assess the health of their quality management systems (QMS) and drive improvement. 

  • Engage in the new supplier selection process to ensure critical suppliers are audited, graded and approved according to the SQRAM process.

  • Work alongside the Category Brand Manager through the New Innovation Quality process to qualify new suppliers and products. 

  • Work closely with critical suppliers to develop comprehensive quality control plans for the manufacture of critical raw materials (CoA), components and finished goods (CoC).

  • Manage incoming and outgoing inspection process of critical raw materials, components and distributed goods to ensure conformance to quality. 

  • Manage supplier quality issues and drive improvement through the CAPA process. 

  • Manage supplier material quality holds for non-conforming product, sample inspection of suspect bad lots, segregation of bad product, management of non-conforming materials, and rework of distributed goods.

  • Work closely with the Procurement Team to develop supplier KPI’s and manage Supplier Performance through Vendor Scorecard system. 

  • Communicate Supplier Performance KPI’s to senior leadership.

  • Drive continuous improvement and provide technical guidance to the business. 

Skills & Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in quality, engineering, or related technical field (Master’s preferred)

  • Minimum 5 years related supplier quality management experience in a manufacturing environment

  • Proven record of developing and implement Supplier Quality programs 

  • Knowledge of statistical software packages (Minitab preferred)

  • Familiarity with plastics, mold processes, dry powder processes, metal forming/welding, and associated testing methodology

  • Ability to effectively influence cross-functionally at various levels within the business

  • Strong written and oral communication and presentation skills
