We are looking for a Director of Engineering, Hydroponics who will grow at our Vancouver, WA corporate office.

The Hydro Engineering Director will lead the technical advancement of the Hawthorne lighting innovation platform while executing the product innovation pipeline that supports the business strategic goals. The role will also provide engineering oversight to other hardware categories used for Hydroponic gardening such as controllers, fans, humidifiers/dehumidifiers etc.

In this role you will:

  • Act as the key contributor to building out the Hawthorne R&D Engineering team from ground up

  • Lead all technical advancements in the Hydroponic lighting category to drive product development and process improvements such as concept, specifications, design, supplier specifications, product validation, certification to meet specified cost and performance parameters

  • Manage vendor relationships with domestic and international suppliers while also holding them accountable to product requirements and quality specifications

  • Seek out innovations above and beyond the supplier capabilities; create a vision for the lighting category

  • As an individual contributor, conceive, plan, and conduct research in problem areas or areas of opportunity

  • Serve as the technical specialist in the application of advanced theories, concepts, principles and processes for the hydroponic technologies

  • Keep abreast of new technologies for the purpose of recommending changes in existing programs or new programs warranted by such developments

  • Partner closely with Category Managers to ensure they are armed with ample technical knowledge on the categories they support

  • Participate in the initial production phases of product/process design and all subsequent manufacturing inquiries and problems

The perfect person will have:

  • Advanced degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering. Ideally a Master’s degree paired with significant horticultural/hydroponic industry experience

  • Minimum 10 years of lighting development and/or research experience, preferably in horticulture/ agriculture setting

  • Proven success with setting strategic direction for an R&D Engineering division and building a team to support

  • Advanced knowledge of light fixture components and technical functionality

  • Experience interacting with and contributing to cross-functional teams

  • Drive to deliver products on time with attention to quality

  • Strong negotiation skills with global suppliers

  • Ability to travel up to 25% of time, sometimes internationally to Europe and Asia

Some other nice to have’s:

  • Process control engineering knowledge on use of sensors and signals to control environment

  • Advanced knowledge of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) and the impact on plants

  • Knowledge of differences in HPS, CMH or, LED performance for Hydroponics or horticulture

  • Knowledge of UL, CSA, EC, and ETL certification processes
