Job Description

At the Hawthorne Gardening Company (HGC) we want our people to empower more people to garden no matter where and how they choose to grow. We accomplish this by encouraging people to live happier, healthier lives through gardening. If you also feel this way then you’d fit in great with us!

We are looking for a Senior HR Generalist who will join our HR Supply Chain team working remotely. You will support multiple locations on the West Coast, which will include overnight travel, around 35% of the time.

The Senior HR Generalist provides exemplary HR services to Supply Chain Operations associates at our Hawthorne Distribution facilities. If you were selected for this role, you would support 6 distribution facilities by assisting in investigations, employee related issues, answering day to day questions for associates, engaging in hourly full-time and temporary staffing efforts and providing support to company-wide HR initiatives. If you are innovative and able to drive change, engage, and influence the business to implement new ideas/programs, this is the opportunity for you!

Everyday you will:

  • Provide associate relations services to associates in the form of facilitating open communication, resolving associate issues, and coaching.

  • Provide HR generalist support to supervisors and managers including policy interpretation, performance management, problem solving, FMLA, ADA, Worker Compensation and leave of absence administration.

  • Lead investigations and following up on Ethics Line complaints relating to Associate Relations issues and unemployment claims/hearings.

  • Responsible for supporting the Full life Cycle Recruitment for non-exempt positions and providing support for exempt positions as needed. This includes developing and executing a staffing strategy, creating requisitions, coordinating recruiting efforts, interviewing, working with managers to make final selections and job offers, and counseling hiring managers on the hiring process and philosophy.

  • Support HR Projects: participates on project teams and/or works independently on a variety of projects including the development of new policies, programs, performance management, succession planning, and training.

  • Drive a positive culture that creates an inspiring associate experience.

To thrive in this role you must be:.

  • A HR professional with a Bachelor’s degree and ideally with 3 to 5 years of experience in an HR Generalist type role in a distribution/manufacturing/supply chain environment. Certifications are a plus as they are achieved based on training and experience.

  • A self starter who operates well independently and in a team environment.

  • An ambassador of our culture- inspiring all to bring their best daily and living/leading our values.

  • Curious- demonstrating an innate desire to learn how things work and how things can be improved.

  • Energized by high change environments and is comfortable with ambiguity.

  • A problem solver- using creative avenues to solve problems, demonstrating both breadth and depth; demonstrating strong judgment and proven ability to diagnose issues, drawing on both professional experience and strategic thinking skills to drive appropriate solutions with self-initiative.

  • Experienced with:

  • Employee Relations experience/expertise (i.e. leading investigations from investigation to conclusion, coaching Leaders at all levels with regards to feedback/development, managing EEOC claims, leading conflict resolution)

  • Have supported front-line associates, managers, executives, etc.

  • Demonstrating knowledge of Human Resources policies, procedures and practices of effective HR leadership, including knowledge of state and federal employment (i.e., EEO, FMLA, ADA, FLSA) and compensation laws.

  • Professional demeanor with the proven ability to effectively work with all associates across the organization.

  • Exceptional interpersonal, leadership, and communication skills with a proven record of building relationships, influencing others, and collaborating across multiple operations and corporate support functions.

  • Adaptable and flexible with the ability to work well under changing dynamics and ambiguity.

What makes this role unique from others:

  • Many jobs say “fast-paced” and keeping up with the day to day.  We would describe this role as fast-paced but high-change - just because we do something one way one day, doesn’t mean it will be the same tomorrow.  Constantly thinking forward and being proactive to solve problems better than yesterday’s solution.

  • You will also work closely with centers-of-excellence and peers to drive consistent practices across the company by stakeholdering and aligning where necessary.

  • Scotts is a growing company and our industry is growing rapidly.  We feel like a start-up in some ways but are a 151 year old company. There are opportunities for growth at any level of the company.

What we do for you (just to list a few cool ones):

  • Competitive benefits including Health, Dental and Vision coverage.

  • Onsite gym facilities at both corporate locations in Marysville, OH and Vancouver, WA.

  • Fitness Club Reimbursement ($350) for remote employees.

  • Nutrition reimbursement program (up to $200 per associate and per spouse).

  • Immediate eligibility 401K match (up to 7.5%) with vesting and match.

  • Immediate eligibility Discounted stock purchase program (15% discount).

  • Our commitment to diversity and inclusion includes employee resource groups: Scotts Women’s Network, Scotts Black Employee Network, Scotts Veterans Network, GroPride Network, Scotts Associates for a Greener Earth (SAGE), and Scotts Young Professionals.

  • 13 paid holidays and generous vacation policy.
