We are looking for a Mechanical Engineer - Lighting who will join our Research & Development (R&D) team in Temecula, CA.

The chosen candidate will work in R&D and help support the Temecula plant’s lighting manufacturing lines. This position will work with local operation departments as well as Hawthorne global quality and compliance departments to optimize and troubleshoot the manufacture and assembly of horticultural lighting fixtures. The lighting categories of Hawthorne include commercial and retail HPS, CMH, and LED fixtures for a variety of growing facilities. The role will also support the development of controllers for lighting and other environmental uses primarily for Hydroponic indoor gardening. The business supported by the role provides products for hydroponic indoor gardening as well as greenhouse horticulture markets in North America and globally. The chosen candidate will both work with vendors and third-party contractors as well as provide individual contributions to execute product development.  The ideal candidate will be self-driven with an eagerness to learn in a fast-evolving industry.

 

What you’ll do in this role:

  • Work with R&D lighting team to develop mechanical designs internally or through OEM/ ODM to support the release of new luminaire designs that meet the highest standard for performance, quality, cost, and safety from preliminary concept through implementation into manufacturing

  • Primary resource for design for manufacturing and assembly optimization for the development of new lighting products within Hawthorne R&D team

  • Work with the factory engineering team and help identify, review, assess, and resolve issues that may arise during manufacturing operations.

  • Provide assembly line support for on-site manufacturing projects, including highly automated processes and methods with an emphasis on repeatability and minimal error rate. Provide manufacturing with technical assistance, root cause analysis, and efforts in process control and scrap reduction.

  • Develops manufacturing processes by studying requirements; researching, designing, modifying, and testing manufacturing methods and equipment; conferring with equipment vendors

  • Perform competitive analysis and research competitor products quarterly and collaborate with category and sales team to generate ideas for making best-in-class products

  • Develop costing and quoting bids for new projects and products

  • Develop work instructions for manufacturing and work with quality to set boundary definitions and quality standards and training

  • Work with procurement and PLM team on accurately creating bills of materials, drawings, and instructions for vendors and manufacturing. Maintain all product documentation in SAP.

  • Work in close collaboration with manufacturing, compliance and quality for the design of products for optimal quality and manufacturability

 

What you’ll need to be successful:

 

Education:  

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or Manufacturing Engineering

Experience: 

  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in new product development, sustaining or manufacturing role, preferred in horticulture lighting fields

  • 3D CAD modeling (Solidworks preferred)Knowledge of project management, factorial design of experiments, lean manufacturing, machining

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (excel, visio, word and project)

Knowledge:   

  • Advanced knowledge on mechanical engineering, manufacturing engineer and process

  • Knowledge on DFSS, DFM and lean process

  • Knowledge on UL, CSA, EC, and ETL certification processes

  • Knowledge of project management, factorial design of experiments, lean manufacturing, and machining

Skills and Abilities: 

  • Ability to interact with and contribute to cross-functional teams

  • Ability to handle multiple projects or tasks simultaneously

  • Drive to deliver products on time with attention to quality

Some other nice to haves:

  • DOE Software (MiniTab or equivalent) 

  • SAP (MRP systems)

  • Bilingual in Spanish and English
