The Station Manager, Kelowna Research Station serves a critical role in the operation, safety, readiness and appearance of Hawthorne’s Kelowna British Columbia Research Station.  This facility is operated in collaboration with the Flowr Corporation, a well known Licenced Producer in Canada. 

It is the first ever facility dedicated to research on cannabis.  The facility is part of Hawthorne’s commitment to our customers and partners as it allows our products to be tested on the plant many of them grow/cultivate with these products.  This station has over 20,000 square feet of dedicated research space with ten (10) growing rooms as well as an onsite analytical laboratory.  These critical components of the Kelowna Research Station enable cutting-edge biological research to develop new hydroponic products across our extensive number of brands and product categories including Gavita, Sun System, General Hydroponics, and Botanicare to name a few.

The  Station Manager will work closely with the Kelowna Research Station Director to help keep our facility and infrastructure in research-ready condition while also ensuring the station is tour ready. The station includes multiple grow rooms, mother & propagation rooms, and a post-harvest processing room as well as a fertigation room.  The Station Manager will be instrumental in maintaining our facility on a daily basis and identifying ways to improve our operation, processes and systems.

What you’ll do in this role:

  • Assist the Research Station Director in overseeing the daily operation and help maintain the Kelowna Research Station as a state-of-the-art research facility

  • Support the Research Station Director with the support staff to ensure that all Hawthorne research is being conducted per trial requirements and to support all associated good research practices.

  • Develop and implement inventory processes to ensure all necessary research materials are on site and available for all trials to be executed.

  • Support the facility by identifying those items that need improvement and developing capital projects and supporting documentation for implementation at the station.

  • Coordinate activities with Flowr maintenance personal and/or outside contractors to perform routine maintenance and troubleshooting on systems such as fertigation equipment (Dositrons/pumps/emitters), a variety of lighting technologies (LED/HID/LEP/CMH), DDC control system, automated irrigation, RO water system, fertigation and water softeners.

  • Ensure the function and appearance of the research station is tour ready

  • Establish and maintain research areas using appropriate sanitation support, equipment as necessary to support Flowr’s production licence.

  • Maintain a wide range of research equipment dedicated to the station and assist with key customer tours and events, serve as Research Station Director backup on specific responsibilities.

  • Continue to develop Flowr collaboration through all interactions with Flowr on-site leadership and other staff members. 

  • Actively promote, enact and enforce all environmental, health, safety and security policies.

What you’ll need to be successful:

  • Associate/Bachelors accreditation from University or certification in greenhouse operations, horticulture, biology, engineering or similar relevant field preferred

  • 5 to 10 years’ experience in a horticultural or agronomic related facility such as a commercial greenhouse, cannabis production, consumable food production, irrigation systems, botanical gardens, etc

  • Legally authorized to work in Canada without company sponsorship now and in the future

  • Working knowledge in general facility maintenance, fertigation systems, etc.

  • Passion for everything horticulture and to have scientific curiosity in all things for the station.

  • Strong collaborative and positive customer-service attitude with good verbal and written communication skills.

  • Ability to operate environmental control systems, irrigations/fertigation systems, RO water systems, lighting controllers and other control systems

  • Motivated to recognize needs, make improvements, find solutions.

  • High attention to detail, work quality.

  • Ability to work independently, troubleshoot, lift 50 lbs.
