We are looking for an Electrical Engineer, who will join our Hawthorne team in Vancouver, WA.

The chosen candidate will be a key leader of Hawthorne’s Lighting and Controllers innovation pipeline in support of our International and North America business units. The lighting and environmental controller categories of Hawthorne include commercial and retail lighting technologies such as HPS, CMH, and LED fixtures for a variety of growing facilities. The business supported by the role provides products for hydroponic indoor gardening as well as greenhouse horticulture markets globally. The chosen candidate will both work with vendors and third-party contractors as well as provide individual contributions to execute product development. The ideal candidate will be self-driven with an eagerness to learn in a fast-evolving industry.


What you’ll do in this role:

  • Develop a multi-year innovation and product improvement pipeline for the Lighting and Controller category in collaboration with the category manager and other R&D team members with focus on advanced digital electronics and software development

  • Take a leadership role in smart device product improvement, embedded software validation and operational platform software development for Horticulture Lighting and environmental controller products 

  • Lead innovation on product pipeline related with high energy density power electronics, highly integrated intelligent device, machine learning and big data analysis

  • Support category and marketing team on technical instruction manuals and product specification sheets

  • Support quality and manufacturing teams on activities related to Lighting fixtures and Environmental Controllers.

  • Manage relationships with domestic and international OEM suppliers related to the environmental controller category while also holding them accountable to product requirements and quality specifications

  • Partner closely with other Category Managers to ensure they are armed with ample technical knowledge on the categories they support

  • Partner with sales tech services to provide transfer of knowledge for sales training and to receive feedback from field applications that influence product design criteria esp. from user interface and operational software integration with applications.

  • Travel up to 15% of the time


What you’ll need to be successful:


  • Must have a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, or an engineering discipline with software development experience required, master and PhD is preferred.

  • Strong competencies in data structures, algorithms, software engineering, and programming techniques is required

  • Deep knowledge of object-oriented programming and experience with at least one programming language (C/C++, Python, Java, Javascript, C#)

  • Low-level Linux software development for embedded systems: kernel debugging, kernel module development.

  • Knowledge in architecting IoT systems using technologies such as AWS, SQL, node.js, MQTT and SSL. 

  • Experience in automated testing including unit and functional testing using Java, Selenium or similar.

  • Knowledge or interest in QA methodology and development tools (version management such as GIT or Subversion, defect management such as JIRA, or test coverage) is highly desirable 

  • Working experience with mathematical modeling, statistical analysis, machine learning (supervised & unsupervised) and deep learning frameworks like TensorFlow, Keras and PyTorch is preferred. 

  • Ability to interact with and contribute to cross-functional teams

  • Ability to handle multiple projects or tasks simultaneously

  • Drive to deliver products on time with attention to quality
