The Director, Internal Consulting will lead an internal team and manage external experts to create value for the business by executing high-visibility initiatives and delivering measurable results.  The projects will vary widely in scope and scale.  This Director-level position will have a wide range of responsibilities including identifying business improvement opportunities, scoping solutions, identifying the best way to execute projects utilizing both internal and external resources, executing initiatives with excellence, all while communicating progress and results to stakeholders.  Additionally, this leader is expected to manage and develop a high performing team.


This is a key new role in our SOF (Special Operations Force) Team.  SOF is a focused, dynamic team within Scotts that reports directly to the CEO and is responsible for strategic planning, competitive intelligence, internal consulting, and M&A.  We are looking for a high-performing, experienced candidate who can make a significant and immediate contribution to the team.

In this role you will:


  • Work with the SVP, SOF to build the internal consulting capability for the company including recruiting resources and developing processes to execute initiatives consistently

  • Lead a wide range of high-visibility, strategic projects for senior leaders

  • Work with senior executives and the business units to identify and scope initiatives that support the corporate / business unit strategy

  • Define the approach, timing, and resources needed to execute projects

  • Effectively communicate the results of the team’s progress and results to the Executive Leadership Team

  • Support other leaders in the SOF team with strategic planning and M&A activities as needed

  • Manage a team of high performing, cross-functional experts to complete both long range and ad hoc projects

  • Identify, onboard and manage external subject-matter experts and/or consulting firms as needed to execute initiatives

  • Manage the performance of direct reports

  • Provide guidance, mentoring, training, and support to team members to develop a solid pipeline of succession candidates


The perfect person will have:

  • 10+ years experience working for a management/strategic consulting firm and/or leading an internal consulting team (ideally in the consumer products or manufacturing industry)

  • Deep subject-matter expertise in supply chain, innovation, marketing, or sales processes combined with broad business knowledge

  • Expertise in leading process design and mapping including familiarity with process improvement techniques such as six sigma

  • Solid track record executing at a high level as an individual contributor and then holding positions of increasing responsibility in leading and managing the following areas:

    • Planning - ability to take complex problems and breaking them down into smaller workstreams with clear owners and next steps

    • Project Execution - demonstrated experience leading high-priority projects from concept through implementation

    • Stakeholder Communication - superior verbal and written communication skills - including the ability to build presentations to communicate complex topics in straightforward ways.  Strong presence, poise, and persuasiveness to quickly establish a high level of credibility at all levels.

  • Solid understanding of organizational change management approaches and techniques

  • A desire and comfort in working in a changing, fluid, ambiguous environment

  • Ability to meet aggressive deadlines

  • IQ/EQ balance that will enable growth into senior roles.

  • Ability to work in a collaborative, open work environment.

  • Advanced degree such as a top-tier MBA a plus.
