Job Description

At the Hawthorne Gardening Company (HGC) we want our people to empower more people to garden no matter where and how they choose to grow. We accomplish this by encouraging people to live happier, healthier lives through gardening. If you also feel this way then you’d fit in great with us!

We are looking for a Copywriter who will grow with our Creative Services team supporting our Hawthorne Gardening Company.  This position will be remote with limited to no travel.

The Copywriter writes clear, concise and compelling copy for products, packaging, and multichannel marketing communications (including, but not limited to digital/social communications, website content, print advertising, marketing collateral, internal and external press releases, etc.) for Hawthorne and its 35+ brands. Your words will engage, inform, and serve as a catalyst to increase our share of the professional and hobbyist hydroponic industry by speaking to our various customer targets, both B2B and B2C.

Our ideal candidate is a detail oriented, fast-learning, skilled and imaginative writer and team player who can shift from B2B to B2C writing projects with ease. You must be adept at writing from and developing copy to represent multiple brand voices and comfortable presenting your work to various stakeholders.

You’re comfortable generating multiple iterations of copy to satisfy all stakeholders’ needs.

In this role you will:

  • Oversee development of product copy, editorial copy, site development copy and other messaging for the company.

  • Develop copy for our primary marketing channels - paid and organic social/digital advertising and direct email.

  • Collaborate with internal and external creative agencies, PR and other professionals on small and large-scale marketing projects (e.g. email campaigns to website homepages).

  • Conduct high-quality research and interviews to inform writing.

  • Edit and proofread copy as needed.

  • Use SEO principles to maximize copy’s reach.

  • Establish copy needs for direct marketing materials and campaigns, ensuring that all copy requirements are clearly communicated.

  • Edit all website copy through each step of the production schedule--from start to finish through our internal approval process.

  • Collaborate with Integrated Marketing, production and category teams to meet product and production deadlines while ensuring that copy aligns with the goals of various internal stakeholders.

  • Work cross-functionally to share and align copy across customer touch points; serve as an advocate of brand voice integrity across the portfolio.

  •  Maintain the highest editorial standards for all copy.

In addition, the person will also have:

  • 4-year Bachelor degree in English, Journalism, Marketing or a related field.

  • Strong editorial skills and minimum 5-7 years’ editorial / copywriting experience.

  • Must have created creative campaigns, product packaging, and digital ads from creative concept to execution.

  • Prior experience in consumer product marketing.

  • Ability to proactively manage and prioritize multiple projects to meet tight production deadlines.

  • Ability to distill complex subject matter into digestible content.

  • Experience developing creative marketing language within strict legal and regulatory guidelines.

  • Flexibility to quickly move from project to project as priorities change

  • Self-starter who is comfortable in an extremely fast-paced environment.

  • Able to keep projects moving forward in an environment with high levels of ambiguity.

  • Strong organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail.

  • Cannabis industry experience is a plus.

  • Strong research skills.

  • Collaborative spirit.
